The result will be a perfectly exposed sunset with your friend correctly exposed with the fill in flash in the foreground, the friend has to be within range of the flash.
Just something else to try.

There is only one way to use a monopod that I know of and that is to hold the camera in front of you and look at the monitor or look through the eye peace…….
I like looking through the Eye peace myself……
